Alternative lens?

Well i think i have decided to purchase the canon Rebel Xt with the kit lens. But what would be a good, alternative lens other than the kit lens? I am looking for something under $200

I have heard great things about the 50mm f1.8. Is there anything else i should be looking at?

Note my two main focuses are:
-Still life(close up)
-And portraits/people

Basically, a versatile, all around lens.

Think you can talk Nikon into putting a EF mount on that 85mm f/2.8 macro for the OP's Rebel?

I would love it if you could cause Nikon has some great glass that I would like to use on my 40D & 30D. The OP could look at the 60mm f2.8 macro from Canon I suppose. It's $354.00 right now at B&H. Or a set of Kenko extension tubes for the 50mm f1.8.

The kit lens may be the best zoom lens that you can get for under $200...so stick with that.

Adding the 50mm F1.8 would be a good idea.
