An Evocative Black and White

This is my second time working with this model. Layne is really amazing with creative posing and he has a way of creating a great expression and connection with the camera. I really love it when I get to work with a talented model; most of the work I get is for new model development, and having to direct an inexperienced model while also taking their photos can be frustrating and tiring.

Shot in all natural light, with a large (4x6ft) white reflector for fill light. Canon 5D MKI, Canon 85mm f/1.8 lens set to f/2.2, 1/8000sec, ISO 500.

I like not just the portrait but the use of shadow in the lower right, that's an effective subtle use of what was there, and well used texture/contrast as part of the composition.

And with your earlier comment, now you know what it can be like for us teachers... (or those of us who have done some teaching, although I actually enjoy it which is why I'm a teacher! lol).

Thank you. The shadows are a big part as to why I love the shot too; I'm glad I was able to capture the shape of the plant life in the shadows. I usually don't shoot so wide with the aperture setting, so a lot of the detail of the plant was thrown out of focus, but the shadow brought some of that detail back in a different and interesting way.

I imagine teaching can be very challenging. I don't do it on a regular basis, but it's not easy when I do take on a student. I love seeing them learn and improve though, and it's a great feeling to know that you had that influence on them.
