Abbots Sphinx Moth caterpillar. Absolutely stranger than fiction. The caterpillar is an incredible mimic. Your eye is drawn to the look - a - like 'head' which is actually it's tail. It is marked and looks like the head of a snake. The mockery doesn't stop there. If you look closely at the 'eye' it appears to have reflected light? It isn't. That is another part of the disguise. That spot is a spot! That's not any eye. It's on the wrong end of the worm and that whole end of the caterpillar is made up to convince you that you have encountered a serpent. It 'strikes' rapidly and acts like a snake. There are even vents between its feet/legs which hiss at you. Don't believe me? Believe me, I wouldn't either if I hadn't researched this amazing work of nature.
