Hey All,
This is the Anhinga, it is a curious site in the Everglades. It just keeps popping it's head out of the water and then darting back under. Kind of looks like a snake. Then it just hangs around in a characteristic pose with its wings spread out. I was quite fascinated by them during my short visit to the everglades.
The Anhinga doesn't produce much oil, unlike a duck....so its feathers get quite wet. While wet, it has minimal buoyancy and can slowly glide underneath the water, or just hover like a submarine and poke its head out. After it comes out of the water, it has to hang itself out to dry.
They get the inglorious name of "water turkey" because of their tail feathers.
This was all new to me, so I thought I'd share.
I wish I had had time to do them justice.
Hope you enjoy.
