Another b&w self-portrait

I've wanted to learn how to achieve this effect for a while... Turns out a rainy weekend was just what I needed Here's what I came up with. C&C always welcome!

First off let me say that I like the photo. No doubt about that one. Now time for my beginner question: what "effect" are you referring to? I see that the background has been cut out and the image has been desaturated. Is there something that I'm missing? Please excuse my ignorance if I'm overlooking something obvious.
