Another what lense next post! Beware!

I am a noob and have had my camera for less than a week.(T4i/650D) My kit came with 75-300 and 18-55 lenses. It also came with a screw on macro and 2x telephoto. I ran out and got the 40mm STM and really like that lense. I am going on Vacation/camping in a week and I am going to take all my saved change to get 1 more lense for my bag.

I am looking at the new 18-135 f3.5 5.6 STM,or 85mm 1.8, or 100mm f2. Any recommendations or opinions?

Omg... if you're a noob, you don't need anything else than the 18-55mm kit lens. Seriously.
Learn to shoot with that first, then go and buy up half the Canon shop.
I have less lenses than you do currently, and I've got no problems shooting anything: (18-55mm kit and a 50mm 1.8).
So... save your money for more advanced equipment... e.g.: Hoya filters, remote, a decent flash...etc. You'll need them in time. IMO you don't need more than 2 glasses as a beginner to shoot almost anything. Like for me: the 18-55 gives a wide-enough angle to capture a bit of scenery, and the 50mm with the crop sensor gives a tight enough angle for some decent portraits with BOKEH!!

You may not agree, here is what I believe regarding lens purchase.

Before you buy a lens, you need to know what you are trying to accomplish with the lens. And before that, you may need to know more about photography and photography gears in general.

For example, how different focal lengths affect your photos? How different aperture settings affect your photos? What you need to do to achieve certain looks in a photo (i.e. background blur, close up objects and freeze motion etc)

Once you know what you need and understand how to achieve the goal, you should know what to get. Or at least know what to ask.



What I am trying to say is lens is a tool. You use the tool to create your product. Without knowing what end product you are going to make, it is hard to recommend a tool.



So before you make an additional lens purchase, I recommend you stay with what you have now, use them and find out what you need to get later.

I'm sure you've done some home work before coming to this board for advise. If you're just a hobbyist like me, I'd stick to the kit lens and something for low light shooting. One thing though, I'd say sell 75-300 and buy 55-250 instead. That will cover your wide angle to telephoto range while your pancake lens will give you better low light ability. Both 85 f1.8 and 100 f2 will be great for portraits with creamy bokeh and better performance in low light than your pancake. But I've gotten great portrait shots from using my 55-250 in its telephoto range. Your pancake will probably be pretty decent for portraits also. So shoot with what you have now before plunging into purchasing 85 or 100mm. 18-135 will give you wider zoom range so more versatile than carrying around two zoom lenses. If you don't need the reach of 55-250, perhaps sell both kit lenses you have and just get 18-135 instead.

Don't buy anything just yet. Use what you got for a year. Then come back after a year and you probably won't need to ask this question because you'll already know what you need.

You probably bought that kit from an amazon dealer? They add bunch of useless stuff to make it like their package deal is a good deal (screw on macro and telephoto) .

My next lens purchase is going to be the Canon 45mm f/2.8 tilt shift. Any other lens i Can rent for about $20 but no one seems to have a tilt shift.
