Absolutely! Ambient light reading from a good meter is the most accurate if used properly. It measures the ligh falling on the subject which is more accurate than the light reflected off the subject.

Look on E-bay for bargains. I bought a Minolta IV lightmeter for 120 bucks and it's worth every penny.
