Photography can be an expensive hobby. Some people do great homemade Do It Yourself set ups. Even if your pay packet now allows you to buy top gear some may still be proud of their budget set ups and results. What do ye think?

good idea, i have a few diy that i could post.

Sounds like a great idea! I don't have any DIY ideas to add but would love to learn!

Yes, please!

I would love it! I do set-ups using DIY's. I am on a tight budget, and anything I can create myself gives me options to have what I can not afford. It also, allows me save money for equipment such as lens. I have to buy equipment one piece at a time, so now I am saving for a good flash. I make a lot of my own props or get them from yard sales and thrift stores. I have even picked them up next to peoples' trash. I am not too embarrassed to use items that no one wants anymore.

I hope the forum starts one, because I am sure there is a lot of individuals on here that have created a lot of DIYs.

Great Idea, a DIY section would be very cool.

*glances at the equipment section*

That section has grown rather fast, esp with the 3 or so manufacturer groups we have in there, adding another section is adding yet more to the forum structure and, well, we don't really get an overwhelming number of guide based custom/DIY threads (if we get many they tend to be already well contained within the lighting section).

I'll tell you what though, one idea that might replace the need for a dedicated subsection (at least until there is more volume) would be for a single member to start an archive. A thread dedicated to listing down the various DIY threads posted as well as letting others add them to the list. A resource like that can easily be made sticky for a resource on the site. Hopefully it would also promote others to post such content - if it gets to a point where we've a large amount of contributing content along those lines we can certainly open up a new section to cater directly for it.

The only problem is........... Stickies themselves tend to accumulate.

True, but we honestly don't have that many stickies.

((and yes a few of them do need updating/changing/removing). But like I said the idea is to first prove that there is content and contribution on a scale worthy of opening a section. At the moment most DIY posts I see tend to be:

1) One post wonders from people looking to drive traffic to their blog/forum/website where the guide is posted

2) Replies to already running threads which are not specifically outlined as DIY approaches in their outset

3) A handful of guides scattered around the site in various already running, subsections (As well as a good few in the interesting articles section).

If I have time later or if someone else does it first, I think a single thread with DIY solutions from the past would be a good idea. Which part of the forum would it go in though? I'm sure not all DIYs are about lighting...

I would suggest the general Equipment section since DIY in itself generally deals with equipment. That way it can be focused on any specific area of photography itself - from lighting to working within specific interest areas.

There are currently 58 forums and sub forums on TPF that regular members have access to, and that doesn't count the 8 current Supporting Vendor forums.

Suggestions on how to reduce the number of forums are also welcome.

i was searching today for a DIY speed snoot that didnt involve a Pringles can!
