Hey all!

I just attended a workshop with Australian photographer Jerry Ghionis and he is simply amazing! He shoots using a Lowell ID 100-watt focusing video light for the majority of his shots and I'm wondering if anyone else does that?

What is your experience?

If you don't shoot with one, have you heard anything about them?

I'm just thinking about purchasing one - his photographs are nothing short of perfection!

Let me know what you think! Thanks!

I've heard of photographers doing that, but I haven't really looked into it.

I'm sure a good photographer could create outstanding photos with either a flash or a video light.

Very true - just thought it may be something to look into. Plus the video light gives a warmer glow than flash (at least to my untrained eye )

I guess I'm just curious.

I have a Lowel* iD-light that I use for still lifes. I tend to use it through a softbox or other diffuser. It is quite versatile and can be used direct, but I prefer my Dedolights for that. Dedos are more expensive, however. The dimmer on the iD-light is useful at times, but it does alter the colour temperature. The plain i-light is the same, but without the dimmer. The iD is easy to use from a battery belt, and it is light enough to mount on top of a still camera, in the hot shoe. The Dedo is really a bit too heavy for that.

The Pro is similar, but designed for both battery and mains use. Under mains power you can put 250 W lamps into the Pro.

Best,
Helen

*The guy's name is Lowell, but the company name is Lowel, if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the info - I had no idea if anyone was using one or not :)

You can also gell your flash for a warmer effect.

This is true - guess I'll have to start playing around :D

I saw an awesome video of a wedding photographer using a video light to take wedding portraits. They were very striking.
