My ultimate fear is doing a photo shoot and the client hating the pics.

I suggested that lenses are not a must if you do not feel you need them, but if you speak of clients, well, then they are a must. You need some more control on depth of field, for example. And lenses are not the only expense: you need lighting equipment (builtin flash is not the way to go). Before that, you need lighting knowledge (much cheaper, and useful even without equipment ).
