Like matt says it's too small for us to judge.

Could it possibly be a depth of field problem? What aperture was used? It might explain why your single portraits are fine but your family shots arn't.

I wouldn't rely on post processing, over sharpening looks ten times worst then soft focus.

jon_k how can a lens be mis-calibrated on an SLR? The camera's autofocus unit works on the same image as the photographer sees and everything is done through the lens. I posted a rather large post last month about focusing issues not being the lenses fault and no one was able to come up with a logical explanation of how a lens error could cause the camera to focus incorrectly. Do you have any input on this?

Oh and with that edited version I would have preferred the sharpness layer to be masked onto only the subjects not the entire image, but that's personal taste stuff.

Well, I know if an element is slightly out of alignment, you'll definitely lose infinity focus. If the sensor plane isn't aligned properly then you can also encounter focus issues. Depending on quality control of a lens, and weather you get a bad copy or not you could have slight misalignment, or major misalignment. Same for the body.

It is unlikely the original poster has this problem. I can't say anything unless I did some tests with her equipment.

Many people come on these forums and say they sent their lenses to Canon and Canon returned it saying "re-calibrated, front (or back) focus issue" as the work performed. I've also seen some people need to get their bodies calibrated for their specific lens.

I'm not a mechanical engineer with a focus on physics and optics... but it seems it does happen.

I like this portrait for its honesty, slightly deadpan with a dash of attitude.
All except the lad on the right, he doesn't fit the pose, he's not looking into the camera, maybe he wasn't ready for the shot, vacant expression.
