Sorry I took it the wrong way like she was trying to be miss perfect or something.....but your talking to somebody who barely is shooting in manual still learning basics of composition I usually tell the girls a general pose but then they usually start moving and I will try and give them direction from there. I quite like the poses she did but that's just me. Usually in the middle of these types of shoots my brain becomes so boggled with camera settings, lighting etc creative ideas don't get to flourish as well.

It all comes with practice (sometimes LOTS and lots of practice.

I still like your shots. I think your model is to be complimented. She obviously spent a lot of time putting on perfect makeup for you...and her hair must have taken a real long time because it was perfect...and she brought 2 outfits to get changed into for you...and she braved the chilling cold to shoot pictures with you. Obviously you're a hot number and models just do these kinds of things for you all the time! Right? LOL

As far as poses go...I dont mind her poses...consider this: Youre trying to figure out camera settings in the freezing cold... and your model has a dress on with wind flowing all through it...that leaves little attention left for pose creativity!!

Suggestion: I found a little trick that significantly helped with my model photography big time. I went over to a place like ModelMayhem.Com and took a look around. I have a profile there so it was easier for me. Look at all the portfolios on there. There are 600,000+ photographers and models on there. Some of them have really nice posing skills that I dont have yet. So I right clicked and saved every image that had a really gorgeous pose in it...and I started making folders for categories of poses like (over the shoulder, leaning on a wall, laying down, freezing in the snow etc). I would then use those 30-40 images to refresh my mind on what great poses look like... just before my model shoot. My best shoots happened when the model also looked at the same images...and she picked out the great poses that she was the craziest about! The models totally loved having some pose ideas they could look at. I also tore up magazines and saved some nice looking images in a real folder. The model would look at the poses and she would then know exactly what to do with her body...and I would look at the poses too...and then I would guess at the angle, the distance, the lens etc. and I would then verbally guide the model to move her arms or turn slightly right...because the images I saw in my viewfinder were just a bit off from the ideal. Now I had some intelligent directions I could give my models. This idea brought big returns for me and my skills and confidence as a photographer.

The idea of using common...generic...public kind of poses (especially) as examples to learn from and practice from... was great for me and the model too. Neither of us were great at posing in my earlier days. I cant tell you how many times my mind would just freeze up in the middle of a session...because I couldnt think of any more poses I knew...and I had only 4 of them memorized...maybe less. LOL! I was a real craftsman!

So... You go ahead and look at your cameras instruction manual till you get that figured out so its second nature...and then give the model some poses you tore out of the grocery store magazines you bought last week. Yes, LmPhotos...buy some girlie magazines...and study them for great poses you want to try someday! By this summer...you will then be taking great pictures...and your model will have some great vogue pictures of herself that you took! Nice work...if you can get it!!

PS. Models dont work real well at 25 degrees and below...read the instruction manual! They tend to freeze up.
