I had fun taking photos of this little dude... Your thoughts?

Not bad; the lighting is good. You've done a nice job of balancing fill and ambient. I would prefer to see his shoulders turned a little more and have him looking more toward the camera, but that's fairly minor. Other than that, I would level the tilted horizon and be happy with the product!

Just my $00.02 worth - your mileage may vary.

Thanks John! I'll show you another shot from that evening... It's the little sister, age 3. Her mom and dad couldn't settle her down long enough to pose her, but she was ridiculously photogenic just doing what she pleased. I normally get at eye level to shoot the little ones, but in this case I wanted to water to make up the entire backdrop, so I shot while looking down at her slightly.

in cases like this is where gels can make a big difference. I think you leveled out the fill and ambient balance well (though I think the flash is maybe a touch too hot), but there's an obvious and large difference between the color of the sun light and the fill light. It would be hard to fix it in post, because fixing one would compound the other. A very light yellow gel would have evened this out a bit, and then allowed you to fix it how you wanted in post.

I would probably burn the sand in front of the boy in post, it's a bit too bright, especially because you see the sand behind which is much darker.

Thanks for the feedback. Would you say the little girl is too warm or too cool against the background?

It's hard to say without knowing her skin tone, but I would say too cool, though for some reason it isn't as obvious to me with her as it is the boy.

Her skin tones holds up well against the photos I took of her in brighter light... I'm thinking it's her shirt that's too cool... Your thoughts?

I just answered my own question... Her shirt and the whites of her eyes are definitely too cool... Thanks for the tip... White balance adjustment coming soon...

Does this look better to you?

yeah, white balance is WAY better.

Agreed... Thanks for pointing me in the right direction... I'm thinking of a slight desaturation, and then leaving it alone...

The last photo is very nice. Light, comp, exposure, expression/emotion, focus... It all comes together very well, imo. Simple and sweet.

Thank you!

#1 is pretty sweet. Love the placement. Exposure is not perfect but its pretty decent. Its hard to match lighting for these type of conditions anyway.

I can see fingers dangling from beneath crossed arms there. Try and have them curl them up into a fist so you don't have that. My eye was drawn right to it.
