I watched your granddaughter's "cups" video and song...I thought she was pretty good at that. This pic....ehh...yeah, I see whatcha' did there...not too bad...enjoyable to look at, but the darkness and lack of details makes me want "more"...more on which to construct some kind of mental storyline...but, still, it's a moment in time...worth looking at for a while. WHat I DO THINK is most interesting is the very subtle highlighting on the faces...both female, both dark-skinned black people, both kind of sad, or vacuous expressions, so the visual "echo" there, in the highlights and the dark faces, is the big draw.

I had originally written a line above the picture, which I deleted, that said 'I know it's dark, I like it dark'

But you have the absolute right to feel that way.

What more do you think you would get out of it if it were lighter?
I think that lighter would destroy the moody feeling.

me, too - about the pretty good at singing, the subtle lighting and the visual echoes.
I tried it brighter and it gave no more story line and the mood disappeared.
This is actually darker than it appeared to me there but exactly how I envisioned the picture.

Shot from the hip fairly far away with an Oly EP3 and a 20 mm pancake.
I was happy to get what I got and the cropping was what I had hoped for.

I would say use moody lighting. This has almost no lighting. when i first looked at it the photo it took a few seconds to even see the face. Once I finally saw the face the face did not look right there is an odd shadow on the nose that makes it look like there are two noses on the face.

I actually spent several minutes looking at it very carefully trying to decide if it would benefit from some lightening around the face and decided that IMO, any change in exposure would ruin the mood.

I like this one. The darkness feels right to me. But you have to see in on the right monitor. On my laptop, all I could see at first was the painting's forehead, the necklace and the watch. And that lead to a "Huh?" reaction. On my full monitor, the details revealed themselves.

I don't know what you mean by 'use moody lighting.'

The photo does not feel balanced, the painting is cut out too much as part of the eye is cut off, there is too much visible noise for my tastes, the image also looks very dark and looks like it was taken with a cell phone. I would have stood back a lot and had her on the right side and the painting on the left and balanced the photo out that way.
