I've always read about how nice clamshell lighting can be, so I figured I would give it a go.
Umbrella directly above aimed down, reflector below.

This is one genre I have no idea about, so I'll pass on the C&C till I get some hands-on experience, but you look beautiful without the makeup, it's a lovely shot!

The lighting control is nice. Even the glasses came out perfectly lit. I love the hair with the two strands out--fabulous.. Best of all is the expression. Very well done.

If I were to suggest anything, I might try cropping it differently.

@f2bthere Great call on the crop. I did struggle in that area. A better wardrobe choice would have left me more creative options. As for the glasses, somehow I'm always really lucky and glare hasn't ever been an issue for my selfies! I'm not sure how I pull it off every time. Thanks for the compliment on the hair, it's about the ONLY thing I can do with it until it grows out some more. *shrug*

Lacking more space at the bottom is a challenge.

You could crop in even tighter...

Or reshoot with other wardrobe options if you can persuade your model .

@f2bthere I have an unnaturally strong aversion to cropping heads, which I'm afraid if I go tighter, would be nessessary. A reshoot is probably out as well. I'm not really a fan of the lighting tbh. *shrug* I think I prefer my 'shower curtain scrim" for soft light options.

If you think any particular shot will be framed someday, you should leave enough margin so that the mat and frame will not encroach upon the important parts.

As to this style of lighting vs. more diffuse light; they each have their uses.

Totally agree. Makeup obscures more than it reveals, and not in a good way. My wife wears minimal makeup, and neither do my daughters, and they all are radiantly beautiful. And real. Jazzie, you look just fine. In fact, I was thinking that to complete the image, you need to be holding a flute of some nice champagne. Just because.

I suppose my comment could be construed the wrong way. I actually very rarely wear makeup, only for parties and pictures. In fact my current makeup collection was purchased.....*gasp* 6 years ago, and I still haven't run out. (Is that gross? This stuff doesn't expire does it? *shrug*) However, the camera isn't always very flattering....and a little makeup goes a long way in portriats, I think. There's gotta be a reason that the HMUA position exists for models right?!

As for the champagne, after last month- I've sworn off alcohol for the year! Hahaha. Maybe a nice Breve?
