I am trying to help you when I say this. The focus on number 1 is good. Could have used a higher aperture number. And it's a good shot of the pup. The downfall is there is too much dead space on the right. Crop it out. Both shots need more contrast. To my eye, number 2 is slightly out of focus. Higher Fstop is your friend. Hope this helps.
LightSpeed

P.S. I like people who like animals.

Thanks Lightspeed. I do see what you mean about the higher f stops. I've been play with dof lately trying to get it right but so far it's not where I want it. It seems as though when I get the crisp clear image I want I start losing light and need longer exposures or more iso neither of which I like.
I think I need to stop bouncing my flash and just jump to a f10-f12 or so.

Personally, I think you did great on the focus in 1, and it's definitely a keeper. 2 could use some work, but you're on the same level and the animal which is good. Although, Cloie appears to be quite vicious (I'm sure this is not the case, haha) and the angle is disorienting.

Also, you should be able to bounce your flash and use f/8 (at least) depending on the flash you are using and the size of the room.

I'm using a sb-600 and the room is probably 600 square feet with high ceilings.
I just need to shoot more at mid range f stops and get a better feel for it.
Thanks for your input.

I like number 2 best I like the composure and what's going in, it makes the out of focus not matter to me

I think #1 is a good pictures. I personally would have upped the blacks, maybe, or burned the nose and pupil of the eye just a little. But thats just me. The focus is great imo, the only thing I see "wrong" with it is that his/her eyebrow whiskers over the far eye arent in focus, or the far ear. But thats not really an issue to me personally. Keep the dead space, too, it looks good.

The second one is a funny picture, but the angle bugs me. As does the border of wall and floor in the background.

I like the first one, but it's a tiny bit flat. It needs some contrast, just a little bit more, not to lose any detail, but the white is rather flat.

That last edit is great! I love me some Boston Terrier, nice shot. I was going to say you could sharpen a bit more, but it might not need it.
