Baby Fever

Hey, wow, these are pretty nice. I LOVE the name written on those eggs! She is one beautiful, beautiful baby as well. Shots 1,2,3,7 are also just gorgeous. I like the quality of the light you've achieved, and the processing too. I'm not a super-big fan of babies, but these babies look alright, I have to say.

These are fantastic! Such a precious little lady! Lighting is wonderful. The headpeice in shot 1- did you make that? It looks "paper flower ish" (In a very good way)

wish we had invested in such memories when my oldest was born. I am sure the mom will be overjoyed.

These make me want to break out my ring sling and bounce around. :giggle: Not for any of my own- all future babies WILL be borrowed and returned, faster than a redbox rental. ;-)

Aww thanks! No I didn't make that, I found it at Walmart believe it or not. The first 4 are the same baby girl, 5 & 6 are a little boy I had, and then the last few are my most recent one, another girl. One of the prettiest babies I've ever seen. The first baby girl was soooo tiny, she was a week old and not weighing 6 lbs yet. I never had one that little, I couldn't get over how small she was.

I promise you, I DO see the difference in the babies. Posting before coffee make my thoughts pretty scattered. They are both pretty darn cute though!
Both my babies were around 5 lbs. I always see newborns now that look SOOOO tiny, and then their moms are like- yeah she's is 7 lbs! Its so hard believe my kids were smaller. I mean, I remember how small they were, but its hard to compare when they aren't side by side. KWIM?

I dont shoot many babies, but I am supposed to be doing easter pictures for my friends 3 month old on the 17th. Any good tips for that age?!

I've seen the gauzy looking fabric marketed for and used in baby photography but I would double check how it's being wrapped. Yours look better than some I've seen. If you look at this video/website it shows that swaddling needs to leave room for movement of the baby's legs and explains why.

My background is in Early Intervention and I've worked with lots of preemies etc. I would rethink some of the baskets and buckets etc., like the square one; it looks like the baby barely fits and the feet are rather scrunched into the corner, it might be better if it was a little more roomy.

You probably already know that until a baby has adequate head control to be able to lift the head, the neck and head need to be supported as a unit, and I would recommend instead of using buckets etc. to go with something that's a way a newborn would be typically positioned. The thing to make sure is that the head should not be flopped over or especially not be down on the neck/chest as that can restrict the airway.

I'd suggest looking up some resources from medical sources like the Mayo Clinic or ZERO TO THREE Homepage instead of just from baby photography sources, some of the info. about posing newborn infants etc. may not always be appropriate information.

Oooh, 3 months is tough. They'll still fit on an infant posing beanbag thing, but won't sleep like infants do. But yet they don't sit. I tend to have a soft throw or something on the ground and put the baby on its back and try to capture its cute positions, especially if they grab their toes. I get very few babies that age and it's been a while, but I remember thinking it was an awkward age to try to photograph. I'd Google it honestly, I know I've read some articles with tips for older babies that aren't sitting yet.

Thanks for the info. There's plenty of room in that square basket, her legs were fully extended and the wrap in the corner of the basket contains no toes. As far as swaddling, I do what the baby is comfortable with. Most of the time the legs are free because I've not had a lot of babies who like to be completely swaddled, but for instance in #7, that's the only way she'd quit crying. She much preferred to be wrapped completely up.

I prefer not to do a lot of overly "proppy" stuff, but that's what's popular these days. So I cater to what is wanted by the family, while remaining safe and realistic. It's amazing to me what some parents will request because they saw it on Pinterest, but I've had two children myself, I'm more than aware of what a newborn is capable of. If I put a baby in a basket, it's weighted at the bottom and the entire baby is well supported inside. They're not squished and if their head is laying down it's supported off the chest as well. I refuse to do the "froggy" pose or any other popular pose that I personally feel is unsafe. In fact I've never done a newborn composite because I don't see the point in taking pictures of a baby in a position he/she cannot naturally achieve safely. The last thing I want is to risk an infant's well being.

Also, I don't know how many newborns you personally photograph, but I don't leave an infant in any one particular position for more than a couple minutes at most. I won't start shooting until the baby is so sound asleep I can move him/her without waking her up.

no you're not. I don't get particularly weirded out by those shots, but some of the stuff I've seen around makes me go Like I said, the baskets are a trend thing right now... and I don't have the ability to refuse reasonable requests from my clients. It's just not possible for me to succeed (from a business standpoint) around here doing 100% of my very own creative vision 100% of the time. I did like how that set turned out though.
