First promo pics for a band. They asked for the black background. Let me know that you think.
I definitely prefer the color shot, but I wish the backdrop hadn't caught the lights.
Yes the color shot
Just burn down the background to make it black ( because they requested black...).
I'm going to run against the current here and say the BW is the preferable. Why? Because the color wash on the middle guy just doesn't fit....period. Also the choice will hinge strongly on the use that photo will be put to. Neither one says MUSIC so for promo's the BW is far more eye-catching and dramatic, highlighting all the players equally...or nearly so.
What genre of music does the band play?
The lighting is quite harsh.
IMO, the shadows in both photos are to dense, and some fill light would have greatly improved the photos for promotional use.
The guy in the back/middle in the color photo got left out, light wise.
I'm going to go with 'neither'. The shots are very noisy and the lighting is... well... unusual. What sort of music do they play, and what is the intent of the image?
I agree -- I'm drawn to the middle guy who is in the devil light, and probably not in a positive way.
Band photo shoots are hard, honestly. I played in a cover band for 5 years, and we were constantly looking for ways to get good promo photos. We were never really successful.
Hey Keith... get outta my head!
I like the concept... And I too think the B&W works best... Especially for print I think... The highlights on the heads look better. I would love to see a little more light on the the shoulders of the gentlemen at both ends. Did you take any shots with instruments? I'm wondering how their instruments would look in the light. I did a promo shoot for a band in a very dark venue where the band used red as their primary lighting color. I dialed back the red a bit in the shots so they wouldn't glow so much...
Thank you all for your critiques!
It's been said a few times, but the colour one is definitely throwing me off. The middle dude looks like he ate a really spicy pepper before the shoot.... If you could re-shoot with the same lighting but have a few more shots to choose from, I think it would benefit both the colour and BW shots... Just my opinion though!
Also, did you have the option to use other colours or did they request only red?
