banner picture question

I have a family member that is wanting me to take a picture for a basketball banner that is 3x4 foot in size. How do I go about getting the clearest picture possible for that size.

I'd shoot it as a panorama: Use a tripod, and set the camera on manual. I typically shoot them from left to right.

Frame the left side of the scene, noting what is on the right of the viewfinder. Shoot.
Pivot the camera to the right until the object near the right (in the previous shot) is about 1/4 of the way from the left edge of the viewfinder. Shoot. Repeat.
Use photo stitching software to combine the series of shots (CS3 and above can handle it. I believe.)

^^ That! Plan your shot based on the aspect ratio (in this case 3:4) so that you capture the right amount of the scene with only minimal need for cropping.
