At least drop it by a couple of stops and diffuse it...

Nice one. I like seeing the wear on the steps, you can imagine how many trips up and down that took.

You think? I think the flash totally wrecks it. That warm bulb set in that location would do WONDERFUL moody things with those walls and stairs.

Yeah, little or no flash, and see what it looks like with just the bulb. Then you could try other light sources on the stairs, perhaps another, smaller bulb above and behind the camera. It might even be worth trying light painting - combine an initial exposure with just the bulb at the top with other exposures with the bulb off and painting the stairs with a flashlight.
