Does anyone know whether there is any way to determine the residual battery power in these? I have the 430 EXII and can't seem to get this info from the unit or manual. With all of the software and electronic wizardry incorporated into this device, why can't it tell me how my batteries are doing?

(Yes, I know the time for the "ready" light to come on is an indicator, but really ...)

Carry a multimeter with you? lol

Interested in this also as I have a 430EX I coming in the morning.

No, AFAIK, there is no 'batter meter' on these (or any other) flashes.

I can sometimes get a decent idea of how the batteries are doing, by the recycle time. This is easier with alkaline batteries, but with NiMH batteries (which I use), their recycle time is pretty fast, right up until they are almost dead. So when it slows down, I know it's time to change them.

And of course, NiMH batteries will self-discharge even when not in use. So if they have been sitting around for a few weeks or longer, I'll charge them up anyway...so I know they are fresh.

And of course, you could just get a 'battery tester'. http://www.amazon.ca/Universal-Tester-Button-Cell-Battery/dp/B003C2UP8A

Thanks, Mike. I guess I got spoiled by having the battery level indicator on digital cameras.
