Can others edit my Photos
Photos NOT OK to edit
I am wanting to get a battery grip for my D7000, and I've noticed there are a lot of cheaper options than the Nikon brand. Can I get some input on what would be a good brand to purchase, or if I'm better off just splurging for the Nikon brand?

Thanks!

I went with the Nikon one, just because I didn't want to risk damaging the D7000 body with shoddy 3rd party electronics.

I have yet to hear of anyone who let all the smoke out of their D7k by using a non-Nikon grip.

I've been using an off brand grip for about a month and I love it. It looks and feels solid, the shutter release button feels a little cheap compared to the one on the camera but it works great. After using it for about a week the camera just doesn't feel right without it.

Here is Nikon's USA camera warranty: Nikon Digital Imaging Warranty

Note #3: my underlining

This warranty does not apply to any defects or damage directly or indirectly caused by or resulting from the use unauthorized replacement parts and/or service performed by unauthorized personnel.

Which pretty much also means 3rd party lenses, grips, batteries, flash units, triggers, etc.

I bought my off brand for $50, shipped. It comes with 2 battery trays, one for standard AA's (6) and one for EN EL15 type. So far so good, used it for 4 shoots already.

So I'm screwed....... I don't have a Nikon camera bag.

You also forgot non-Nikon filters, lens caps, straps, tripods, USB cords, remotes, lens brushes and light from the Sun.

Most of those things are worded so that they can shaft you one way or another if they really want to. :meh:

Oh, and using a non-Nikon memory card will create a black hole.

netskimmer isn't trying to tune anyone away from getting 3rd party items. so the sarcasm is a bit much. but its there in black and white in the warranty's terms and conditions; obviously Nikon will not have issues (assuming you're not dealing with shoddy agent) when it comes with memory cards, tripods, bags and other items that Nikon isn't specialised in (yes they offer it but even they know they don't take those items seriously and don't expect anyone to seriously consider them as a primary option). however a grip is an an entirely different matter, it's like taking your Nikon to be serviced by a non-Nikon accredited company or individual and when inadvertently damage it or later on in live you take it to Nikon and they realise what you did - ofc they'll say no. a grip interacts at an intimate level with the camera - they're designed to work together - a tripod mount on a camera is generic, the card reader is generic, generic aspects of a camera construction don't really get nick picked by Nikon if something goes wrong (unless they can prove to you that its due to the card and not a faulty issue with the body)....

but with a grip. as soon as they see a 3rd party grip and you say something is wrong internally, they'll pass it to being the grip's fault and what are you going to do? tell them they're lying? lol...

The lesson here is, drum-roll please, take the grip off before you take it to be serviced and if they ask if you use one lie like a Persian rug. Assuming the camera doesn't have some internal snitch program the will rat you out.

those internal switch mechanisms would be very interesting if applied to cameras. i know for example that Microsoft does a scan of every 360 that connects to xbox live (every time they do so) looking for any mismatched firmwares, hardware alterations etc i wouldnt be too surprised if Nikon did something but it has to be something fairly full proof that cant be worked around. i guess for some people and maybe myself in future, they don't lock out third party lenses (that wouldn't be hard to do at all)....

A lot of concejcture, theories and old wive's tales: But has anyone ever heard of it actually happening? Anyone? .......Bueller? ................Bueller?
