Is this type of photo taken to much to be anything special?

In my opinion, yes. Absolutely. Done to death.

There was one dude who took some shots from within the breakers that were ASTONISHING. (googles)

Ah yes, Clark Little...

Clark Little Photography, Hawaii: Online Gallery

Anything shy of that level of creativity is not even worth shooting, IMO.

Depends on the viewer; for me living on the Pacific Ocean, waves are something I see everyday. For someone who lives on the Kalahari Desert... they're probably more interesting. That said, in this particular image, I don't see a lot to hold the viewer's attention.

yea I didn't think so, I live on the beach too ,just trying to gain some knowledge here thank you.

To begin with, it is rather an ordinary shot. Also, besides the curl, there is no subject definition, so yes, it is nothing special. When you want to make a photograph of the seashore, try to turn it into something special. How you do that is up to you.

Just drop a chick in a bikini in there and you are good.

Personally, I'd much rather it be a handsome, athletic dude in swim trunks, but yeah... :D

I'm gonna differ just a LITTLE on the prevailing opinion here.
THIS specific shot is not that "special"--but whether or not this TYPE of shot is even worth doing:

"There is nothing new under the sun." MOST subjects have been "overdone"--photographed again and again and again, from all sorts of different angles, with different lighting, etc. Waves at the beach, waterfalls, the deer at the edge of the woods, the Eiffel Tower, Stonehenge, a mountain stream, ad infinitum--it's ALL been done before. Sometimes, as in this case, done so often that it's "boring."
But all that means, imo, is that it's probably NOT worth taking these shots if your goal is to sell them. But it doesn't mean it's not worth photographing.

There have been approximately 426 bazillion flower photos taken. THIS year. But my mother would still rather have a 16x20 flower photo taken by ME than someone else's. And truth be told, *I* would rather hang up my OWN photos than someone else's.

So, if you like photos of waves at the beach, what difference does it make if it's overdone? None of those other many, many photos of waves are YOuRS.

Valid points. Very nicely stated. I nominate this "post of the week" for TPF.

This particular type of shot yes it is overdone and holds nothing to it. Looks more like a tourist snapshot to me rather than being a worthy photograph. Beaches and waves need to be creative or have subject matter to hold peoples interest. Just a random shot of a random everyday boring wave though is way overdone. Try getting into the water, different times of day, getting another subject in your shot such as a model, surfer, peir, something.

:-P Made you look
