beginner looking for advice

i have recently been passed down my grandfathers Canon A1 and his set of lenses. I've been interested in photography for a long time and finally have the financial ability to buy a camera and is thinking of getting a nice amatuer level Canon EOS digital rebel T1i.
does anyone know if the A1 lenses are adaptable for the T1i?
if not, i might consider a different brand and any advices on whats a good camera for a complete beginner.

Canon FD-mount manual focusing lenses are,basically, for practical purposes, useless orphans on any modern d-slr body. I would forget about the old lenses,and decide what to purchase based upon modern offerings.
