Hello I really wanna get into photography so i recently purchased a Nikon D3100. I havent been shooting on anything but Manual but the lens has been on AF. It came with the 18-55mm DX VR Zoom NIKKOR lens & the 55-200mm DX VR lenses. I'm guessing the 2nd lense is for telephoto. I havent really experimented with that lense. I hear that a good photographer also usually has a decent Point & Shoot camera for times when you dont have the time to mess with all the settings,or when u need to pull out a camera really quick. I have a Kodak M863 and i've had it for awhile. It works fine nothing wrong with it but i was wondering should i pick up a different or better camera? Any help or criticism or whatever would be greatly appreciated, thanx in advance

Stick with the SLR. And the 55-200mm lens starts where your 18-55mm leaves off. It will zoom in further getting you closer to your subject.

Definately will stick with the SLR but I dont always have the SLR with me. So I was wondering should I go out and buy another point & shoot to carry round for like if i'm just hanging out and something spontaneous happens or should I stick with the Kodak. I'm a beginner so i'm just wondering

Stick with it. You buy things when you personally find something is missing.
By the way, when you do not have time to mess with setting, you can put also dSLR on auto.

Thanx I really appreciate it. I will be seeing yall around

Cool. I have the same lenses except with D90. They are decent so far but Ill probably purchase a prime lense soon with a lower aperture rating soon.

Just make it a habit to always carry the D3100. Afterall, it's a compact digital SLR.

That range of lens is good for pretty much anything. On my D90 I sold the kit lens 18-105AF and got the 18-200 AFS VR which I love and its on the body 95% of the time.

Recently I got a great deal on a 1.8 50mm AF lens which I love for indoor/low light shooting.

For a backup point and shot I have a Canon SD900 which gets thrown around a lot and its usually in one of the my pockets.

Thanx for all the input. Really appreciate it. As I start taking more pics i'll post them, hope they will be good though.i'm open to criticism and critique as well. The Auto Show will be here in NY in April. I plan on going and hopefully i'll really get my feet wet as far as photography goes there. See everyone around

yeah, the Nikkor 1.8 35mm is priced right and a fine lens for various usage.
Highly recommended!
