Benefits of Flas Compensation?

Hey guys I recently learned about a new feature on my 30D called flash compensation. I always heard about it, but never used it.

When is the ideal time to use this? If you just wan to use my on camera flash as a fill flash, should I set it to like -2?

Does it actually reduce the brightness of the flash?

When the voodoo stops working. No really. TTL metering these day is as much voodoo and guess work as it is math. Fill flash works automagically. Normal flash works equally magically. But often enough it just fouls up.

So look at the image then think does the flash need to be brighter or darker compared to the ambient light? Adjust, and try again.
