Besides Ansel Adams, what are some other well known photographers of that time?

I'm always hearing about Ansel Adams but I never hear of any other well known photographers of his time.

Ansel Adams died in "84. He was 82 years old. So "other well known photographers of his time" covers a LOT of turf. Bob Capa. Eddie Adams. Horst Faas, Nick Ut, Yousef Karsh, David Douglas Duncan, Cartier-Bresson, Annie Liebovitz, Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus, Ed Weston, Richard Avedon, Imogen Cunningham, Alfred Eisenstadt, Margaret Bourke-White, Herb Ritts, Lee Miller, Andre Kertesz...the list could go on and on depending upon what you focus on.

However, if you are referring to great landscape/nature photographers besides Adams then you'd probably have Edward Burtynsky (INDUSTRIAL landscape), Galen Rowell, Guy Tal, Alain Briot, Joe Cornish, Michael Frye, Charlie Waite, Peter Beard (I know, he does more than wildlife).

I like Eugene Atget. His photos of Paris back in the day are mesmerizing.

At the same time the objective approach to photography was being developed, William Mortensen offered an approach that was in direct competition. Mortensen even offered his own set of books that took a less exact and scientific look at photography. The two men really represent differing views of the role of photography at the turn of the 19th century, and is really worth looking into.
