I used Composer in Netscape Navigator; pretty much works like a word processor. Don't try to do anything fancy at first, just keep it simple.

I use the search engines and search for words and phrases that are likely keywords that potential customers would use, and try to find sites that are high up on the page that will let me link to them for free or a reciprocal link.

When I search for "BW photographer Kansas" on Google my actual site doesn't come up very high, but 2 out of the top 4 sites on the page have my name showing in their Google search description, and I am linked to those sites. People aren't finding my site first, but they are quickly finding sites that link to me. I just found another site for wedding photography that'll let me link for a reciprocal link.

what are the terms of such an agreement?

Most sites have the info about getting your site listed right on the front page. Look for the small print at the bottom or top, something like "List My Site", "Get Listed", "Link To My Site", etc... Often you'll have to register with the site, tell them exactly where the reciprocal link is at, etc... Some places want a little cash, but there are plenty of free ones.

I do mostly weddings and portraits, so I've been finding wedding and portrait photography related sites is where I'm getting a lot of good business traffic from. These are usually organized geographically, which is nice when you are trying to get local folks to hire you.

There are also a lot of photography web rings and link sites; I don't think I get a lot of photo work from these, but people stop by to visit and look, and sometimes inquire about purchasing a print.

Go to the link pages on my site, and you'll find lot's of links back to the places that are linked to me. You may want to get linked to some of them.
