Best wide angle lens for Nikon D3100

I am a beginner, and right now I only have the lens that came with my camera. My husband and I travel, a lot. I find that I often can't get the picture I want, so I am thinking about buying a wide angle I am just not sure what to get. I need something I will be able to handle as a beginner.

18mm is pretty wide, even on a DX cropped sensor camera. If you want to go wider, you've got several options, based on your whatever your budget is:

• Nikon 10-24mm
• Tamron 10-24mm
• Sigma 10-20mm
• Tokina 11-16mm
• Tokina 12-24mm
• Nikon 12-24mm

These all vary in price from about $450 for the Tokina 12-24mm up to $800 for the Nikon 10-24mm. (prices in USD)

I would recommend either of the Tokina lenses or either of the Nikons. I used to have a D3100 and had great success with the Tokinas. I have not used the Sigma or the Tamron listed. Just bear in mind that if you plan to upgrade to a full-frame camera body in the future, these lenses I listed are only for crop sensor cameras like the D3100, D5200, D7100 and their prior versions.

Can you tell us in what ways you often can't get the picture you want? You are not able to capture the entire scene? The photos were too dark? Colour of the photos were off? Photos were blurry? Subjects in the photos were too small?

It is that I am unable to capture the entire scene. For example, we are often seeing famous sites such as the trevi fountain and I was so disappointed with the picture because I felt it didn't capture the whole thing.
