What's new

Bi-Weekly assignments.

Agreed that was one of the first forums I wanted to post in but at the time no one was doing anything with it and I felt bad resurrecting threads that had been dead for 2 years.

Lol you really don't need to worry about that, a few months ago jeff canes went threw and litterally bumped every thread in there. +fifty come odd posts all in one fell swoop with one word...

That was pretty much the end of it though after that it died out completely. After the one last try to keep it alive did not work I think he just kinda washed his hands of it.

I still want to make it fly I need it even if it failed once.

Making it fly is going to be the result of keeping new and interesting assignments comming on a bi-weekly basis, lack of new and unsual but meetable challenges is the original cause of death to my knowledge.

Making the forum more visable will only do so much, something new has to come up on that bi-weekly basis to keep the attention.

I'll try to make sure the new assignments come up I just want people to know it is there.

Let's post two new assignments on 1/21. I'd really like to see this take off again to help out the newbies - myself included!

We do need a header for the assignments. We should make 1 assignment technical the other assignment subject matter. Bonus points if you get both assignments in the same image.

Sounds fine. One technical and one artistic and or subject matter. Thanks for your help with this.

Got any ideas for a header? I NEED the assignments I have problems with ideas most of the time and I'm far from good practice would be great.

'08 Technical Assignment #2 - Shallow Depth of Field

This might work. Then we just change the # and technical in the header.

Add in something like "Remember no archived images"

Given the number of times old assignments seem to get resurrected, maybe a date range in the title might be a good idea e.g.
  • 1 to 15 Jan 2008 - Technical Assignment #2: "Shallow Depth of Field"
You'd hope that people would realise that it's an old thread, and not post just because someone has bumped it from beyond the grave.

If I remember correctly they where supposed to be on going and unending, but I had been considering tossing the idea of a deadline out here, this would also open up the availibility of reusing ideas when the well dries so to speak.

You might be right about the unending bit, but in my mind the whole point of an assignment is that it has a deadline by which to achieve something. Doesn't that add something to the challenge? More so for anyone who would like to take this beyond a hobby.

I agree

The only reason I mentioned Foundations of Photography is that in my opinion it should be paired with the beginners section because truthfully that is who it is for. I don't see it fitting in with the POTM and the monthly photo challenge because there is no prize involved.
I agree with this assessment. Also, I have no wish to change the header for the TPF contests or potentially muddy that forum with other member activities. It's important to keep forum objectives very clear - as folks still do tend to post certain things in a haphazard fashion, despite clear forum descriptions.

I really appreciate seeing everyone's interest in the assignments forum. To that end, we don't particularly have a problem with moving it to a more visible location to encourage participation. However, we do want to stress, prior to making any moves, that this forum is expected to remain completely member-driven. There should be very little need for intervention from the moderators. Any polls, discussion, planning, should take place in a thread just for those purposes. Ongoing ideas for assignments should continue to be placed in the thread Corry created some time back.

Additionally, as this is to be member-driven, please review the FAQ's Corry originally put forth and feel free to discuss and modify as you choose. Cleaning up the place and keeping things updated is an ongoing task, and your input is always welcome.
