Bidi Break & Playtime

For those curious, bidi is a cheaper version of the hand rolled cigarette, rolled in a special leaf. Anyways, I don't think that these are special, but certainly interesting enough for me to post them. And besides I was trying out the "shoot more horizontals" part as well. Both of these were taken from a moving bus, so not much I could have done differently in the photo taking department. ISO was pretty high, but I think it adds to these images. Any editing suggestions will be appreciated as well.

#2. Crazy kids having a crazy time: I was surprised I got this shot. I didn't even have my eyes on the viewfinder, it's plain luck that the smallest one was looking straight into the camera.

I really like these, especially the second one! They look like they are having a great time, I used to hang on hand rails and stuff like that all the time when I was a kid!!!

Thanks Gallagher.. I was brought up in a village and my pass time used to be climbing and hanging on all sorts of trees and stuff too

Love the texture of the first one, especially the puff of smoke.

Bidis were popular among the ex-pat crowd in Istanbul. I used to smoke them on occasion.

Ah, the stories from the Istanbul years.... The ex-pat English teacher crowd was an interesting mix. My first year, I spent a lot of time with some neo-hippies who ran out of backpacking money in Turkey and had to stay for a few months to teach and replenish their traveling money. Most of them planned to stay only a few months, but Istanbul is the kind of place that doesn't really let you go easily, so most of them stayed a year or two before moving on. So there were a lot of people with lots of different experiences. Almost everyone smoked, including bidis (luckily, most of us had moved past the clove cigarette phase! ) I didn't smoke them often enough to ever want to get my own pack - they would have gone stale - but it wasn't a problem to find one when I wanted one.

I've seen them here in the States, too, but not very often. I think it's kind of a hipster thing.

BTW the fact that these are found in the states as well was another surprise for me. In the US it's a hipster thing, in India however it is considered as something generally used by people with little money to spare (like rickshaw pullers or manual laborers), cigarettes on the other hand are cool ; it's funny how culture changes the perception of something.

I lived in Istanbul from 1998-2001. Then I moved to Portugal until 2003. I love traveling and didn't really get to start until my late 20s. I don't get to do as much as I'd like in recent years, either, but the bug never goes away. You'll start at some point, I'm sure, and once you do, you'll never stop

You're right - the different associations are very interesting. The same object has such different, almost opposite meanings to different people. This is the stuff that always fascinates me, and it's one of the reasons I love teaching my international students: staying connected to different cultures and learning from them.

Wow! 3 years in Istanbul, and 2 years in Portugal; that is the way to travel IMO. At least that is how I envision doing it myself.. I wonder if I can be a teacher and follow your path Thanks for everything Leonore

Guilty as charged, but not really my fault this time!:roll: The bus was going at 40 mph at least and you can imagine how much time I had to notice them, pick up my camera, aim it and get the shot. Specially the second one, I didn't even have my eyes in the viewfinder

I got a few uncropped feet especially for you (with a great story as well for Gallagher) in stock though, will post them once I finish the editing..
