It was my daughter's 3rd birthday this weekend and this was my first chance to shoot an "event'. I thought it would be fun just to try to capture a few moments from the party.

Any thoughts on these shots would be helpful.

I like this one at first glance, but i wish I had gotten the entire cake and there was less in the background. But, with everyone gathered around the table it was difficult.

I should have used a smaller aperture, I noticed afterward that the ribbons on top are slightly OOF.

I think you've nailed most of the key points already: Background, focus and composition. Remember, if you're shooting an event, don't be shy about asking people to move so that you can get the shot, and give consideration to moving things slightly; for instance you could have (Possibly, I wasn't there, so I don't know for sure) asked people to move back a couple of feet, and moved the cake and your daughter slightly and taken the capture from okay to 'Wow'!

Sorry to bump my own thread, but I was hoping to get a little more feedback. It's been a couple days anyways....

Only things i would say were said by you in the original post. Great colors. She must have loved that cake. Happy birthday!
