Bison Photos for WildForever

One of the conservation areas in our area has an experimental bison herd (why? I dunno - it's not like they're native to this area, but whatever, they're cool). I should go out and see if I can get some cool shots. They are very impressive animals.

I have to admit now I'm extremely curious as to what an experimental Bison would look like. Do they have like one big cyber eye with a laser targeting system? - Or as my daughter often tells me, "Dad, you're just weird". Lol

Unfortunaly my attempts to make a picture of a bison in Belovezhskaya pushcha weren't very successful. The one I saw out of an enclosure in the forest (not truly wild of course) was staying in bushes so even I had plenty of time I just couldn't find a good point of view. Also I had only 18-105 with me so it also restricted.
This is one the pictures

I really hate it when they get off in the tall grass like that, or in one of the dozens of stands of trees - no way your getting a good shot through all the branches. There is one bull in particular who also seems to have a perfect knowledge of the minimum focusing distance of any lens I'm using - because the minute he sees me coming he will close that gap. Only thing worse than a buffalo genius is a smart alecky buffalo genius.. lol

And this genius bufallo lives in other continent that why I couldn't make a good photo:D

Well if you ever get out my way let me know, I'll run you out to the safari park and we'll make a day of it :)

Very good shots! I always have problems with the lighting............ buffalo are very dark around their faces and head area. I'm learning to wait, and to look for the sun to light the head better.

Yup.. lighting is always tough for Bison. The white ones are a whole lot easier to shoot, that's for sure.

Har de har har. ;)

I think it's experimental in the "Let's see what these giant prairie/Great Plains grazing mammals do in the woods and rocky forests of the Niagara Escarpment!" sense.

Ok.. so no great leaps forward in hair gel technology coming out of that experiment then.. pity. Lol

Unfortunately, no. :)

I just found this topic :)

These are fantastic Bison pics!

I really am fascinated by them, and love photgrapthing them. Im actually excited, I have an interview tomorrow to work in the national park in which the herd roams :)

I really enjoyed looking at them, and I appreciate the settings you posted to give me an idea of where i may be going wrong.

I think I am slowly getting to grips with ISO/AP and shutter speed. I am now well aware using my maximum shutter speed to photograpth bison is simply ridiculous.

I am heading back out this saturday evening to the herd, and will hopefully get some shots worth posting, using the knowledge i have gained the last few days!

Feel free to keep posting bison pics :) I really am that addicted to bison photography; kind of sad really :)

Oh. For the record. The bison I shoot are wild. They are the last of genetically pure blood wood bison in the world. I love documenting them. They currently have 4 calfs :)

I do have a question regarding your pics.

The weather looks sunny.. yet your shooting at a low f.stop between 4-6 now I thought on conditions such as these you would want to go higher. IE; THE sunny 16 rule

Never seen shots of the lighter ones Robbin, great to see. #1 is a great head on shot and so powerful looking, amazing look. #3 is superb, just love those water drops, excellent timing and still head on with a head tilt.

All the best Robbin, love these.

Danny.

Depends on the effect your looking for, I like to keep the shutter speed to right around 1/400 or 1/500 in part because all of these are shot handheld and it eliminates both camera shake and motion blur.

By using a wider aperture I can keep the iso low and I get a bonus from the wider aperture in that it separates the subject from the background a bit more.

I could stop the lens down more but of course then I'd be looking at either lowering the shutter speed or possibly raising the iso - like all things camera it's a tradeoff. :)

Thanks Danny. They only have the two white buffalo in the whole herd so they aren't always easy to get a shot of but boy when you do it's worth the wait.
