This is an attempt at posting from I pad, so my apologies, if the quality is compromised. Headshot with a friend. Thoughts and or C&C appreciated.

C&C per req:

1. I like this; nice monochrome conversion, but it seems slightly under-exposed. I would also like to see just a little more detail in his hair.

2. I think your lighting just missed on this one. It seems about 1/3 stop too hot on the strobe side, and about the same too dark on the unlit side. A reflector image left would have helped here I think.

3. Not bad, great expression, BUT again, the dark side seems a bit too dark to me.

4. Not as fond of this one; he has a serious case of racoon-eyes and a reflector low and image left would have helped a lot.

Overall, these make a nice set. Your lighting is good, but still has room for improvement. Keep shooting.

I agree with John. The first one is under exposed and the last one needs more light on the face, but the other two are quite nice.

But in all of them, his hair is very dark and the detail texture is mostly lost.

I put my comment in a joking way but the loss of detail on his hair is a bit distracting and just looks odd. Like there is a piece of his head missing.

I would like to understand how photos like this are taken What are the requirements. I have Canon T2i with the normal kit lens and also a 50mm EF 1.8 II Lens. Can some one explain to me what I would need as far as lighting, background, etc?

I used a black back drop and a couple variations of up to three speed lights.
Strip box right at almost 90 and a shoot through umbrella at 45 right. Some I had an umbrella behind left but I really needed it to be way brighter.

I agree totally distracting how the hair disappears/ head....
