I've been itching to try my new 7D out, but the cloud cover is ruining my fun!

I snapped these at the park today, I'm hoping the sun shows it's face tomorrow so I can get a little color in here!

Not that they're bad or anything...but a 7D with the 24-70 should be a lot sharper than that...it's by far quick enough to freeze motion so the only thing I can think is slightly off focus.

Agreed, with that combo, you should get way sharper images.

Cloud cover is great when outside, gives a nice light diffusion. You lose puffy nice clouds, but great for consistent light

+1

In both of those pics the kids were skating towards me and I was shooting in bursts, so maybe the AF didn't have enough time to get it just right at 8fps??

I'll have to play around with it and see what's up.

The AF should be fast enough to catch kids skating, specially towards you (I just shot a 10 year old's hockey game this afternoon).

Your settings were probably off. You should shoot moving subjects in the AI Servo mode, not the One Shot mode, as this will track the subject and adjust AF while you keep the focus point on them.

Make sure you have a fast shutter...neither shot looks like really fast skating, so a 1/250 shutter should be adequate, even a 1/125 depending on their speed.

Dont be shy to boost up the ISO on the 7D to ensure a fast shutter

The girl was shot at 1/1250 and the boy at 1/800, so they were plenty fast.

I was in AI Focus, which automatically switches between One Shot and Servo, so I should probably have put it in AI Servo. I wasn't really thinking about it since I was mostly just trying to get a feel for the camera, so that's my fault.

I'm going to stop by there again tomorrow depending on the weather and play around with it some more.

Here's a still shot I took today, it looks sharp enough to me, but maybe a 2nd pair of eyes can help.

Alright, I went back to the same place and tried a few with the focus mode in AI Servo.

Thoughts?

Sweet shot of the house! And that looks like Saratoga Spa Park right?

Yep, I live in Saratoga.

The house shot really catches my attention! Maybe a little darker than I like over all but that is a very neat picture.

Thanks! :-)

Are you talking about the whole exposure too dark? The problem with making the whole picture brighter is it blows out the snow. I guess I could try to brighten everything except the snow.

Here's another one from downtown Saratoga, with a 100% crop
