Blown highlights... how to fix??

Yes, I think I'm going to start backing up my lighting by a couple feet. I had an epiphany when I posted the picture and started to really think about what was going on with my set up.

Yes, I agree, the shadow under the fern is black. I tend to focus totally on my subject and less so on the setting when I am editing. Something else I need to work on. lol Always something...
 
this is why I love editing in lightroom.. I show clipping when I'm making my adjustments to make sure I've not got too crazy blown highlights or blacks going.

You can do the same if you're using camera raw in Photoshop.
 
What are you metering off of most of the time? Are you spot metering or evaluative?
