Two things:

note that the sclera of his eyes in the edited shot are medium grey - this isn't correctly exposed
the face is in total shadow and thus poor detail - and the eyes are OOF (see 100% crop)
it looks like the focus is on the shirt.

Thanks lew! I think I will try out my speedlight next time. I'm so nervous about ruining the pics by using a flash that I haven't tried yet!
