Can you tell us what settings you're trying to use? And in what kind of lighting situation... ?

when you press the button half way, does it try to focus? If not there may be 2 possibilities:
1. The AF switch on the lens may be on MF
2. You might have reprogram the button where the auto focus is on the * button
