Bonavista was one of my favorite stops on my long road trip to Newfoundland. Everywhere you go in Bonavista, you see the name of John Cabot. Cabot was the explorer who sailed from England to Newfoundland (Bonavista) in 1497.

His ship, the Matthew, was an all wooden ship...and an exact replica resides in Bonavista. The replica also sailed from England to Bonavista.

3- Fortunately, the Bonavista Lighthouse was open. I captured a photograph of its red staircase. These are very tight quarters...I'm guessing that I'm standing no more than four feet from the door.

4- A colony of Atlantic puffins was nesting near the lighthouse. However, I found it easier to photograph the puffins from Elliston...which is about a ten minute drive from the lighthouse.

9- The Matthew is moored inside that large blue building on the Bonavista Harbor. I toured the ship...fascinating to imagine how anyone could sail across the Atlantic Ocean in it.

I have hundreds and hundreds of photographs of the puffins of Elliston. I will try to narrow those down to a dozen or so and create a separate post to share those pictures and that experience.

Thanks for looking,
Glenn

Wish my mom was still alive to see these. She would love them as she was born and raised in Markland Newfoundland.

Thanks for sharing.
