So while I sit and wait to receive my D7000 that's on backorder, I am picking up lenses. The first lens I purchased was a 55-200mm VR which I should be receiving tomorrow and I will be complimenting it with a 18-55mm VR. I went with these 2, because for the price I get a further focal length for less than the 18-105mm (I will be paying $280 for both refurbished lenses). Now, originally I was set on the 50mm 1.8D which I would use for portrait and sports photography(brazilian jiu jitsu) but I have seen many people discrediting the 50mm both 1.8 & 1.4D for anything of the sort. Im willing to pay around 400 max for a lens for this purpose (plan on buying used or refurbished).

So in the long run would a 50mm 1.4D not be worth the purchase?
Is there really a substantial difference between the 50mm 1.8 and 1.4?

Once again, thank you to all that have helped me these past couple weeks.

I have read that the new 50mm 1.8G is a solid performer, and the difference between the 1.4G and 1.8G is... not worth it. Granted, i do not have first hand experience with either of these, but i would just grab the 50mm 1.8G if i were you.

I was talking about the 1.8D and 1.4D, The 1.8D is $100 and the 1.4D is $350 (although I have found a few used for around 250) The 1.8G is only 100 cheaper than the 1.4D because it is unavailable as a refurb.

Well, as you know, I would recommend the 50mm 1.8(either variety but I have the 50mm 1.8D), but since you already have the 18-55 and 55-200 on order, why don't you see how you like the 50mm focal length and then just imagine a shutter speed around 4 times faster.

Kerbouchard, would you happen to have any of your work using the 1.8D?

Yep have and do use many of the lenses you mentioned.
With the last year the 55-200vr being my favorite walkabout lens.

Pictures by lens type.

This is an incredible collection orb. I appreciate you showing me this. This puts a lot of things at ease for me. I have a bad habit of over thinking purchases. While it usually turns out for the good, I dread buying something that I will regret ie. The D5100 I returned.

Yeah, check out some of the weddings I posted, either here or over at dpreview or at photocamel. EXIF info should be attached. Sorry, didn't really post here for a while, so most of the stuff will be at photocamel.

I kinda stopped posting the weddings after a while...never can seem to find the time to edit everything. I really should post more pics...I just never seem to get around to it.

Hover over the Kermit pics and you will see which lens was used. He used the 50mm 1.8D and G, and the 50mm 1.4D and G for the same exact shot.
