Not too over-processed by any mean; rather a nice mono conversion, but I'm afraid I "don't get" the image...

Well, I'm ok with photos that are not meant to really mean anything, so if you just like it (which must mean that it sure has some meaning for yourself!), then it's ok.

As to your pp: I think that it truly enhances the photo. To my mind, it is not overdone or overcooked, as you say, but a very contrasty conversion which I like. Adds a bit more visual drama to an otherwise quite calm image.

The delineation of the boy's shoulders/head with the grass make it look like he was added to the image.
