Brand new and looking for feedback

I recently purchased my first camera and have taken a few practice shots with friends children.

Looking for some feedback and advice. The more the better whether about the shooting or editing.

P.s don't worry about husbands watermark

The first one has a magenta color cast (white balance issue).
What white balance was your camera set to?

Here is the photo with the color cast corrected using ACR (Lightroom Develop module/Camera Raw). I also did a some capture, global sharpening, and I boosted the mid-tone contrast (clarity) a bit.
Some fill light would have helped to make their eyes look more alive. Using flash allows achieving improved separation of your subjects from a bright, back lit background.

First camera, eh? These look pretty good for a beginner.

Why the dark bands on either side? Not necessary, IMO.

So did hubby edit these or did you?

I edited them using lightroom, the watermark is just set to our married name that's all.

The dark bands are from pulling the photos off Facebook. Is also why they don't look as clear.

If you click on "Options" when viewing a photo on Facebook, there's a link for downloading the photo which will give you the photo itself - no dark bands.
