Brand new to this hobby, purchasing first professional camera

I would not buy a Canon 5D-II. Look for a NIkon D700 at the new $500-reduced price of $2199.

The 5D Classic and 5D II were/are basically $389- grade EOS bodies and autofocusing systems..quite basic cameras, really. If you want an AFFORDABLE, ENTRY-LEVEL, FAIRLY-PRICED "professional camera", either buy the NEW 5D-III for $3499.99, or pay $2199.99 for the Nikon D700.

A LOT of people have never even once used a camera that has a "professional-level" AF,metering, and flash system, and is filled with the "professional-level" features; the Nikon D700 is a professional camera. So is the 5D-III, the newest Canon. You might not have a lot of experience, but I believe that the true professional cameras from Canon and Nikon make it easier to get tough shots under tough conditions than the non-pro cameras. The beginners and intermediate shooters are the ones who benefit the most by going to professional-level bodies and lenses...the salty old dudes, like say gsgary, have the knowledge and the skill and the experience to know how to get the shot with ANY grade of camera...but that's the difference between say a 50 year old guy with 40 years' worth of experience and a 29 year old guy and two years' worth of photography.
