brightness

i have a cannon S5 IS and whenever i want to take a macro shot outside the photo is really bright but when i change it to custom mode it looks alright. How do I fix the brightness when taking the photo is it the aperture? I bought the camera usedso could the perrson who had it before me have put cerrtain settings in?

aperture could be used for DOF and exposure. Shutter Speed is for exposure.
