Been there ..... and you chose to shoot an almost impossible photograph. No way I'd try to capture the dark, dank slot walls, and the bright sky at the same time. There's not enough bright sky in the scene to effectively use an ND filter, which is what you'd do if you were outside.. I'd concentrate on exposing the beautiful canyon
walls, lit by the sun coming in the canyon, and keep the actual sky out of the shot.. Just my .02...

BTW, heading out on 10/14 to Escalante to see if I'm too fat to navigate "Spooky" - if I'm not posting for a while, I'm probably stuck in one of those
16" narrows....

Thanks Rick. It was hard to capture the dark rocks and bright sky at the same time due to limited dynamic range of my Nikon D80. Wish you a nice trip to Escalante.

Hence the technique called HDR (High Dynamic Range).
