Not if the opponent is in a bright uniform.
I always HATE it when the opponent shows up in BRIGHT RED
At that point, shooting the game is reduced to practice, unless you can get shots without an opponent player in the image.

Nothing wrong with red, well okay maybe it is hard to shoot. But there was you a photo challenge to get a good clean shot. Test the camera and test the photog.

The team I cover, that my kids go to, is red and black. Last week, at home, they wore all red.

Get the exposure right in camera (or as close as possible) then if you must, use the HSL to pull back the saturation and luminance of the reds.

If the opponent is in RED, then we will be in white.
Problem is that the red draws the eye to it, rather than to my team.
Dark red and maroon is better than the bright red of some teams, or "look at me orange."

Never tried to desaturate or tone down the luminecence. Now to go look for a pic to play with.

I see what you are saying with the red. The problem that I have with the red is that it is easy to blow out or "glow" with no details. So I've used that to pull back the detail and make it look good.

If I were the team in white, the red of the opponents would be a problem for the pic.

Although in that pic, the red is just barely dark enough that it isn't calling out "look at me!"​

If I were the team in red, not a problem, I win on color.

Unfortunately, our color is dark blue, so even when we have the color, the white of the opponent's uniform sometimes detracts from us.

That pic is an example of what I tell the kids.

Look out for bright colors in the background, that will distract the eye from your subject.​

The ball marker and the guys red shirt would be tough for me to edit out. I need to improve my edit skills.
