Bulb setting

I am using manual setting on my Nikon 3100 and putting it to bulb to try to catch star lines, I leave it for around 30 to 50 mins and then click off. But it takes around another 30-50 mins to process. Should it take this long? Is their anything I should be doing to reduce this? Only because I was trying to do say 4 15mins snaps and overlay they but with waiting for the process time, I thing it might have gaps in the star trails?

Any help would be great.

Disable long exposure noise reduction and it will help.

It is indeed the long exposure noise reduction.
This options will have your camera make a second identical exposure as the first with the only difference being that the shutter is closed. With this second exposure the camera can detect hot pixels and such and correct the first exposure.
If you turn it off the camera won't take the second exposure and your photo should be processed just as fast as any other photo.

IIRC the D3100 does not come with a hard copy user's manual, just a hard copy Quick Guide. The complete user's manual is a PDF on the disc that comes with the camera.

The only reason I didn't try a shot longer than that is because a D7000 doesn't go longer than that.

Err... Yes I am sure.
Look at the star trails. If they were this long with a 30 second exposure the earth would be rotating extremely fast wouldn't it? You'd basically SEE the stars moving.
Also: If you look at the EXIF data you'll see it says 1798 seconds at Exposure Time which is about 29.9 minutes.

There's two ways of startrailing, blending a series of shorter exposures over a long period or taking one continuous exposure. 30 minutes is prime real estate for star trails. Low ISO settings and dark environs...booyah.
