i am new to photography and want to buy a dslr camera body. thanks to my mom and grandpa, i have some old lenses that i can use. they came with two different ae-1's, one newer than the other. i have 5 in all (i hope i am doing this write and what i am saying is the actual lens names)

two different FD 50mm 1 1.8
one fd 28mm 1 2.8
one fd 135mm 1 3.5
and one fd 100-200mm 1 5.6

so i need your help. first of all, i need to find a dslr body that fits these lenses. do all canon cameras fit these lenses?

my next question is, new or used? i plan on having this for a very long time. i am a student, so at the moment i dont want to spend more than 500 dollars. other than ebay or amazon, where should i look, and what cameras do you suggest? thank you!!

Sorry, none of these lenses will fit on DLRS. Canon changed their lens mount from FD to EOS autofocus many years ago and they are not interchangeable. There are FD-EOS adapters, but don't work very well or automatically, and won't focus to infinity.

ok, then in that case... what is the best dslr under 500? or so? new or used?

This is a completely biased question. Short answer. Go to the store handle the camera's. Find a couple you like in your price range. Catch one of those on sale and start shooting.

johnh is correct; you really do need to have hands-on before you make a decision. Canon and Nikon are of course the leaders, but don't forget about Pentax; IMO, the best value for the money in consumer-level DSLRS and literally hundres of different legacy lenses that can be used (many may be manual focus or require learning how to use stop-down metering, BUT they're CHEAP and GOOD!).

IMO = In My Opinion. I am not sure what a Legacy Lens is but a google search might help.

Legacy Lens-I believe are lenses made before slr's and possibly still usuable today.

Legacy = Anything from the past.. that though it is still functional, will not typically work with newer items

Legacy lens = Lenses from the 'old days'. May still be functional on a legacy camera, but not on newer style cameras.
Legacy computer parts = Like the serial mouse, ISA card slots, most older modems (14.4, 28.8, 56k, etc)
