Buying a new tripod, advice please

G'day Paul,

Tripods are one of those things that you'll keep forever, so it's worth saving until you can afford a good one

I've got an aluminium Manfrotto that I've had for at least 20 years, and I'm just thinking about upgrading to carbon now, I figure at about $600 for the legs, if they only last me 10 years that's less than 20 cents per day!. I'll use my old head for a while then think about upgrading that.

My better half doesn't understand it that way, even though she's more than happy to spend a few hundred on Dining out, and put it on the credit card

So I guess when you order the tripod perhaps your best bet is to cleverly arrange for pizza to be delivered at the same time...

Does anyone have any experience with or, heard anything about these MeFOTO tripods that keep popping up? Namely the "Roadtrip" version.

They seem very appealing for my needs/wants, such as light weight, compact, and versatile (monopod) for a day hiking/walking doing mostly Macro, so stability is important. Would I gain enough from the carbon fiber version to justify the price?

I don't have one but I have looked at them at a local camera store. They look quite well-made and solid for small tripods and I've considered getting one. I've heard they are manufactured by Benro but I don't know whether that's true or not.

Well, I have been researching various tripods in the $300 or less (and more) range for quite some time now. It seems that all the info and reviews give the MeFOTO (Benro) tripods a 5 star rating.

I'm going to be the guinea pig and get the MeFOTO GlogeTrotter. I can't find any good reason not to. I suspect that this line of tripod is going to become very popular in the area it was designed for.

EDIT: I'm impressed enough with what I found out, that I just placed an order for the GlobeTrotter, so I guess we'll see

That MeFOTO stuff seems solid. I've played with a few in camera stores, therefore I'm an expert, so yeah.

It's said to stay solid and not have things loosen up over time...well...6 months and approx' 30 outings. Reviewer states moving parts are as tight as day one.

I will post my impressions when I get it. Of course only time and use will tell the whole story.
