I'm going to be picking up a USB 3.0 External HD today, but I am deciding on one of two things; either I buy a stand alone external HDD or an external enclosure and an internal HDD. The logic that I am using is that if I buy an stand alone external HDD and it fails, I'd have to buy a completely new external HDD, where as if the HDD fails in an external enclosure, I just replace the internal HDD.

I'm on the fence with this so any advice would be appreciated.

Prices are steadily falling. By the time yours fails (if it ever does), the replacement will cost half of what you've spent today.

That said, I have five 2TB Seagate Desktop GoFlex's.... never have had an issue with any of them.

The reviews of that particular HDD in that link are scary lol.

Like I said.......... never have had an issue with any of them.

I know I know... I know how the general public reacts to failures and completely writes off a company. It happens. But I will say that a few people have an issue with the sensitivity of the usb connection. Do you travel with your drives?

I think that either way is fine if you don't mind changing out your drives... The plug-and-play externals are pretty simple to set up though...

. Do you travel with your drives?

Not often, but they have hit the road. Never kept track of which ones, though. I just pick up the one that's on the desk when I do take a trip. When they do travel, I use the original box & packing and utilize a ziplok baggie for moisture control/condensation prevention.

All 5 are used for backing up a 1tb internal and 1tb external drives. I rotate them between the desktop and their normal hiding places. One is at the desk, two of them are in my safe, one at a trusted neighbor and the last one is at a relative's 4 states away. That one gets changed twice a year.

tech can always fail. if your worried then print all your photos and archive them. just go to the store and buy the largest one you can afford.

If you buy an external USB hard drive and take it apart, you will most often find a internal hard drive in a case. I fyou buy them separat and assemble them yourself, you can save a few bucks.

I know there is usually a 3.5 HDD but some cases do not have the option of opening it.
